As summer ended in 2019, the family I felt we needed to get away. We had just moved into our house and needed some break from the constant chore of moving in and making things just right.
We had already spent more money than we ever imagined we would spend, so we knew we couldn’t go balls out for a getaway. We wanted to go fairly local.
So, the idea for the Laurel Highlands of nearby Pennsylvania was formed. It was about 3 hours away, looked peaceful, and was something different than the beach towns we customarily go to. I liked the idea of hiking and outdoor exploration while being tame enough to be family friendly.
So, it was decided. On the way there, I remember passing the Maryland state penitentiary where Adnan Syed was housed. His case launched the true crime podcast boom. So, I thought it interesting. Our hotel wasn’t great, to be honest, but we managed. It had an ancient game room, but had two swimming pools. I couldn’t complain.
Due to the need to be family friendly, we didn’t hike to extremes. It was fun. We passed by the Laurel Caverns as well. We got back feeling refreshed. We had a new house, we were moved in, and we were excited to see what the future held!
